We will need to use dental prostheses when we have lost much of a dental piece and it is impossible to reconstruct it with simple obturation or we have lost either a tooth or teeth completely.
Dental prostheses are also necessary when there are defects below the gingiva or when we have a space between teeth.
When several pieces are missing and we have to make bridges ore ven when all the teeth are missing and we have to make dental bridges or when all the teeth are missing and we need to reconstruct complete dental arches, then we are talking about prosthetic rehabilitation, the main objective is that the patient can recover a correct relationship between both jaws.
With regard to the material of dental prostheses we can differentiate three types of crowns.
Formerly there was the only possibility of making bridges to replace the missing pieces, nowadays before the advance of dental implantology allows us to place a tooth without needing to carve the neighboring teeth.
In the case that a fixed prosthesis is not possible because the patient does not have enough teeth, several types of removable dental prostheses can be made, among which we highlight:
Removable partial denture prosthesis
When you have only a few or virtually no teeth in the jawbone. Its support mechanism will be through the teeth that are still present and the oral mucosa.
Total or complete dental prosthesis
This kind of prosthesis is made when all teeth are missing. Its support mechanism is only through the mucosa and the bony ridge, it does not offer a positive stimulus to the bone and it has to be readjusted with some regularity.
We personally recommend this kind of prosthesis to be used only during a determined period of time and to be replaced by a prosthesis with support mechanisms or retention by implants.
Fixed Partial Denture
This option differs from the others because of the quality, especially in relation to the fixation to natural teeth. The easiest way to fix them is by hooks, means of anchors, being the so-called telescopic dentures considered especially comfortable as a fixation system. The telescopic prosthesis can be used in all cases in the maxilla even without a settlement on the palate.
