Learn how to recognize if you suffer from bruxism

Bruxism is an involuntary habit that commonly involves the action of squeezing or grinding the teeth without a specific function either during the day or, usually, at night. Generally, there is muscular pain in the head and neck area, ear and jaw pain, dental wear, joint problems causing pain when mouth-opening, dental sensitivity to thermal changes, as well as sweet foods or with a certain acid content, sometimes the muscle discomfort migrates to regions of the back.

The origin of bruxism has not been exactly determined, but stress is considered the main trigger, although it can also be attributed to inadequate alignment of teeth, poor posture, anxiety and poor sleep habits. The onset of bruxism can occur at any age, affecting both genders equally.

The most common treatment is the use of a splint or guard, which is a rigid or flexible intraoral device that is used during the night or the day to compensate stability and to dissipate the pressure exerted on the teeth, reducing the sensation of pain, diminishes the alteration caused by the force of the jaw in the muscles and joint providing rest, protects the teeth and surrounding bone from excessive wear and distributes force between several teeth.

It is necessary to evaluate the cause of bruxism in an unique way with each patient, as well as a multidisciplinary management, in some cases relaxation exercises, complementary physiotherapy, good sleep habits, avoiding foods that are hard or difficult to chew and, in phases of acute pain, medications such as muscle relaxants, analgesics, anti-inflammatories and / or anxiolytics are considered as a complementary treatment.

Bruxism is difficult to prevent, many people do not perceive it until it has developed and come to a specialist when their teeth are already damaged. Sometimes complete rehabilitation is required to restore worn-out dental tissues and restore healthy biomechanical functioning to the mouth.
